Professional and Service Awards Criteria

Dennis T. Lawson Memorial Award

Purpose of The Award: This award was established to honor deceased members and supporters of the North Carolina Museums profession. The award was created in 1987 to honor Dennis T. Lawson, director of the High Point Museum and Historical Park, a respected and admired colleague who died suddenly and unexpectedly during the preceding year.

Qualifications: Any deceased museum professional, volunteer or supporter.

Nomination Process: Nomination form with individual's name, occupation, death date, and museum affiliations. Anyone is eligible to make this nomination.

Award: Recognition at the annual meeting awards ceremony, on website and in newsletter. Contribution (undetermined amount) in name of individual to the SEMC endowment.

 

William T. Alderson Lifetime Achievement Award

Purpose of Award: The William T. Alderson Lifetime Achievement Award is to honor retired museum professionals for a lifetime of service. It is to show the individual respect and admiration for the body of work they accomplished in their career.

Qualifications: Any retired museum professional still living.

Nomination Process: Nomination form; one or more letters reviewing individual's career; any supporting materials (clippings, awards, etc.); anyone is eligible to make this nomination.

Award: Recognition at annual meeting; photo in North Carolina Museums Council newsletter and website; complimentary awards banquet; original piece of art with plaque.

 

Student Award

Purpose of the Award: The Award encourages college students with an interest in the museum profession to participate in the North Carolina Museums Council.

Qualifications: Any student currently enrolled in college courses who expresses an interest in becoming a museum professional. May be employed by an institution so long as individual is a full or part time student.

Nomination Process: Nomination form; write a one page explanation of what they like about the museum profession and why they want to work in a museum; one or more letters of support from a museum professional.

Award: Full registration for the NCMC Annual Meeting; room & transportation expenses up to $250; recognition during the awards presentation, in newsletter and on website; an award letter from the NCMC president. The individual selected as the winner of the Student Award will serve as chair of the NCMC Student Affairs Committee for the next twelve months.

Service Award for Stewardship

Purpose of Award: The award honors individuals who has served on the board
of trustees or in other executive positions related to the founding, governing or other executive volunteer positions.

Qualifications: Any person volunteering on museum boards, advisory groups or other executive positions.

Nomination Process: Nomination form; letter of recommendation outlining individual's service to the museum; anyone is eligible to make this nomination.

Award: Framed certificate; complimentary awards banquet; letter of appreciation from NCMC president; mention in NCMC newsletter/on website; recognition during awards banquet.

 

Service Award for Staff Contributions

Purpose of Award: The award honors security guards, maintenance personnel, facility managers, visitor service and other museum support staff.

Qualifications: Any paid support staff.

Nomination Process: Nomination form; letter of recommendation outline individuals service to the museum; anyone is eligible to make this nomination.

Award: Framed certificate; complimentary awards banquet; letter of appreciation from NCMC president to director of museum; mention in NCMC newsletter/on website; recognition during awards banquet.

 

Service Award for an Individual Volunteer

Purpose of Award: The award honors individuals who have donated time, ideas and energy over the years to museums in North Carolina.

Qualifications: Any individual volunteer who has given over 120 hours of time to a museum during the preceding year.

Nomination Process: Nomination form; letter of recommendation from director of museum submitting application; anyone is eligible to make this nomination.

Award: Framed certificate; complimentary awards banquet; letter of appreciation from president; mention in NCMC newsletter; recognition during awards banquet, in newsletter and on website.


Service Award for a Corporation, Foundation or Organization

Purpose of Award: The award honors a group who has demonstrated over the years significant interest and support in the programs, goals, and policies of museums in North Carolina or have made significant contributions of time, money, or ideas to a museum in the state.

Qualifications: Any group that supports the museum profession.

Nomination Process: Nomination form; chronology of support for museums and museum professions; anyone is eligible to make this nomination

Award: Recognition during awards presentation; framed certificate; letter from president to corporate headquarters; recognition on website and in newsletter; complimentary awards banquet

 

Early Career Professional Award

Purpose of Award: This award recognizes professionals early in their career for motivation and creativity shown in their work. It is to encourage the individual to continue looking for new ways to think creatively and accomplish objectives.

Qualifications: Individual has worked in a museum between one and five years.

Nomination Process: Nomination form; one letter of support; example of their creative thinking; any supporting materials (news clips, awards, etc.); anyone is eligible to make this nomination

Award: Recognition during the awards presentation; framed certificate; recognition in newsletter/website; letter from NCMC president to director or board president

Mid-Career Professional

Purpose of Award: This award recognizes mid-career professionals to provide motivation and stimulate creativity shown in their work. It is to encourage the individual to continue looking for new ways to find new ways to accomplish objectives.

Qualifications: Individual has worked in a museum between 6 and 15 years.

Nomination Process: Nomination form; one letter of support; example of their creative thinking; any supporting materials (news clips, awards, etc.); anyone is eligible to make this nomination

Award: Recognition during the awards presentation; framed certificate; recognition in newsletter/website; letter from NCMC president to director or board president

Professional Service Award

Purpose of Award: The award is to honor an active, senior museum professional who has demonstrated a high degree of museum professionalism and has given significant service to the museum field. It is to encourage the individual to continue their leadership role and mentor for others in the profession.

Qualifications: Any museum person with at least 15 years in the profession.

Nomination Process: Nomination form; one letter of nomination, two letters of support; any supporting materials (clippings, awards, etc.); brief chronology of individual's career.

Award: A silver cup and inscribed certificate are presented to the recipient of the Professional Service Award by the North Carolina Museums Council president at annual awards ceremony. Framed certificate; free registration to annual meeting; photo in North Carolina Museums Council newsletter and website; letter from North Carolina Museums Council president to nominee's director or board president.

 

Multi-Media Awards Criteria

Print Awards (three categories):

Judged on artistic quality, innovation of design and usability. 

General Brochure: black/white or color. A single printed piece that best describes your mission and purpose.

Newsletter: Publication distributed regularly to the general public describing your ongoing offerings and activities.

Exhibition Catalogue: A single publication in conjunction with a specific exhibition.

Electronic Media Award

Judged on artistic quality, ease of use, interactiveness, educational value and general use as a communications medium.

Best Web Site: Web site address must be listed on the submission form AND on CD-ROM for review by the awards committee. Must include designer (and agency, if not produced in-house).

Promotional Creative Award

Judged on creativity, effectiveness and artistic quality.

Advertising Campaign: Any combination of print, television, radio or internet advertising produced as a single package to promote a specific event, exhibition or membership/fundraising campaign. Must include creative director and agency (if not produced in-house).

Educational Creative Award

Judged on creativity, effectiveness and use of original materials.

Single film or video (including documentary), slide/tape program, interactive CD-ROM or other computer-based program of original design for educational purposes associated with an exhibition or general organizational mission.
