The North Carolina Museums Council served as a sponsor this year for the Arts Day 2005, held in Raleigh, and organized each year by Arts North Carolina. On March 16, NCMC president Tamara Moore and government affairs chair Richard Sceiford joined approximately 150 professionals representing museums, organizations, arts councils, and other cultural nonprofits. After a training session held at the N.C. Museum of History, participants moved to the legislative office buildings to meet with elected officials over lunch or during individual office visits.
Two key issues were on this year's agenda:
NCAC Grassroots grants support programming at many of our state's museums, and museums are among the 52 statewide organizations that benefit from general support grants. For more information about Arts Day, Arts North Carolina, or NCMC government affairs, please contact Richard Sceiford at govaffairs@ncmc.org.
NCMC received a thank-you letter on April 14th from Karen Wells, executive director of Arts North Carolina for our sponsorship of ARTS Day 2005. She expressed her appreciation for our dedication to art museums across the state.
Ms. Wells wrote, "One of our most important goals is to encourage a new spirit of activism within the arts industry of North Carolina and to insure opportunities for networking and future collaborations. 180 arts professionals and volunteers attended ARTS Day 2005, a 40% increase over any prior year.
"A financial goal of the event was to bring ARTS Day from a subsidized function to one of a “small” profit margin. Last year, we broke even. This year, we will book a $3,700 profit.
"We changed the format to a two hour “pick-up” lunch, with delegations meeting in every nook and cranny of the Legislative Building. In 2004, we served 60 legislators. In 2005, we served 125.
"Beyond the numbers, your financial support and belief in our work helped create a spirit of 'can do.' We created more professional looking handouts and materials, and your sponsorship gave credibility to every aspect of the event.
"We are truly appreciative of the partnership and support of the North Carolina Museums Council, and we look forward to a long and rewarding relationship in building the arts industry of North Carolina."
We were proud to have sponsored this energizing event and hope that arts funding to museums in North Carolina will be returned to its previous level soon.
