NCMC's FOCoS Awards for 2005

Consultations completed for the 2005 award winners

The winners of the 2005 FOCoS (Free Onsite Consultation Service) Awards were the Anson County Historical Society in Wadesboro and The Rosetta C. Baldwin Foundation's African American Museum in High Point. Both agencies received consultations by museum professionals and donations of references and resources, all funded by NCMC.

The Anson County Historical Society requested professional assistance in determining the best way to display and manage their collections of early woodworking, farming, and Native American artifacts while making them accessible and educational to the general public.

The Rosetta C. Baldwin Foundation requested ideas for exhibit design and construction that would enable them to protect and display artifacts, papers and documents for years to come. They also wanted recommendations for enlisting and training volunteers to increase the efficiency of their operations.

John Campbell and John Cole, NC Museum of History, were appointed as consultants for the Anson County Historical Society.  Not only did the two gentlemen provide assistance in exhibiting and interpreting artifacts, they also reviewed the Society’s overall operations and provided comprehensive and detailed recommendations for short- and long-range goals and some strategies by which they could be met.

Albert Potts, Onslow County Historical Society, Jacksonville, NC, and Shirl Spicer, NC Museum of History, Raleigh agreed to serve as consultants on the Rosetta C. Baldwin Foundation project.  Their report far exceeded expectations of the Foundation director, Mr. John Clark, in that it reviewed all aspects of the Foundation’s operations besides the exhibits and volunteer issues.

By following their recommendations, the Foundation should be able to manage their collections better and enlist badly needed volunteer help. The two consultants also provided suggestions for improving operations of the Rosetta C. Baldwin Foundation museum by using their guidelines for development of comprehensive long-range plans and adopting strategies for meeting their goals.

Both facilities received a NCMC donation of books and other references that would continue to provide guidance in future operations.
