FOCoS on Success:
2006 FOCoS Program Update

Consultations completed for the 2006 award winner

The winner of the 2006 FOCoS (Free Onsite Consultation Service) Award was the History Museum of Burke County in Morgantown, North Carolina. The museum received consultations by museum professionals and donations of references and resources all funded by NCMC’s FOCoS program.

The History Museum of Burke County requested professional assistance in two program areas. The first request in their grant application identified the need to develop educational programs at their museum. The second request asked for assistance in initiating new marketing and public relations campaigns to further the museum’s mission to the public.
Bill Cissna, a freelance writer and public relations consultant, and Edith Brady, education curator at the High Point Museum, were appointed as consultants for the History Museum of Burke County. Both consultants traveled to Morganton and spent two days reviewing operations and meeting with the museum’s stakeholders to identify and prioritize issues and opportunities. Mr. Cissna and Ms. Brady drafted a comprehensive plan for the museum and identified detailed recommendations for both short-term and long-range initiatives and some strategies by which these goals could be met. The strategic report drafted by Mr. Cissna and Ms. Brady provide the History Museum of Burke County an opportunity to meet their educational and marketing goals.

In addition to the free on-site consultations, the History Museum of Burke County received donations of books and other reference material that will continue to provide guidance in future operations.

About FOCoS: The North Carolina Museums Council (NCMC) created the FOCoS program in 2003 to specifically address the needs of smaller museums in the State. By offering free professional consultants in field areas of administration, education programming, volunteer management, collections management, marketing, and exhibit design/construction, the FOCoS program provides a unique resource to small museums and directly supports the museum field in North Carolina.

Proposals are rated on the following criteria: financial need, expertise need, community support, intended outcomes of FOCoS, and overall strength of proposal.

FOCoS applications for consultations for 2008 are being accepted through March 31st. For more information, contact vicepresident@ncmuseums.org. To learn more or obtain the application form pdf, click here for the FOCoS Program.
