NCMC Awards First JIMI Scholarship

The North Carolina Museums Council awarded a $500 scholarship to Catherine Coulter of the North Carolina Pottery Center in Seagrove to attend the Jekyll Island Management Institute, January 18-25, 2005. The class of eighteen included four participants from North Carolina and participants from Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Louisiana, Ohio, and Tennessee. Participants learned about their individual management styles; how to establish and develop boards of trustees; different interpretative and exhibit techniques; how to write grants and raise funds; and how to manage volunteers, public relations, collections, and archives. After a lively discussion about ethics, the class was divided into four groups for the final project. Each group was given a collection of artifacts and available materials to create an exhibit incorporating all the techniques and session guidance learned throughout the JIMI experience.

At a session presented at the North Carolina Museums Council's annual meeting in Salisbury, Catherine reported that she has already used information learned at JIMI in real-life situations. She showed the large notebook of materials used during the institute and noted that the notebook itself has been a valuable resource. Catherine strongly urged attendees to participate in future JIMI workshops.

The NCMC Board of Directors has voted to sponsor another scholarship, so stay tuned for details on SEMC JIMI 2006!
