The Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC) will hold its 11th Annual Jekyll Island Management Institute from January 18 to 25, 2011. The NC Museums Council will provide one $600 tuition scholarship to attend the Institute to one lucky applicant.
The Council has presented a scholarship, covering tuition for the intensive marketing-related seminar, in past years as well. The NCMC JIMI scholarship awardee for 2010 was Charlotte Fitz, Executive Director, Greenville Museum of Art, Greenville, NC. There was no one from NC in 2009, so the scholarship went unclaimed. In 2008, Ashley Poteat, director and curator at Blandwood, Greensboro, was the recipient, preceded in 2007 by Monica Moody, site manager at Historic Halifax State Historic Site. NCMC selected a candidate for this scholarship as well in 2005 (Catherine Coulter) and 2006 (Nathan Moehlmann).
JIMI, a program created by the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC), is specifically designed for administrators from new and emerging museums and for museum professionals with subject area expertise desiring knowledge of general museum administration and operations. The 2010 tentative program is available as a PDF.
Situated on historic Jekyll Island, GA, this highly successful training program provides an eight-day immersion for museum professionals seeking the opportunity to learn management, personnel and interpretive skills from leading experts. Sessions include management styles, administration and trusteeship, financial management and fundraising, public relations and marketing, working with consultants, disaster preparedness, volunteer recruitment and management, exhibition planning and interpretation management, current trends and professional ethics.
