Closing Date: 09/13/2010Description of Work: Bennett Place State Historic Site seeks an experienced historic interpreter specifically with costume interpretive and living history skills who can assist with guided tours, living history programs, and other aspects of visitor services & educational programming. Primary work involves costumed interpretation with a focus on the American Civil War. Work equally involves lawn care and general maintenance of a 40 acre historic property, which includes a visitor center, historic structures, and maintenance facilities. Retail experience or willingness to learn preferred. Works cohesively with staff & volunteers, assisting with research & museum preservation. Position is typically a 40 hour work week and requires a Tuesday through Saturday work schedule. Some Sunday & weeknight work is required for after hours special events and group meetings. Requires lifting objects at
least 50 pounds.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have experience in performing costumed interpretive living history programs & guided tours, be able to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences & be dedicated to excellence in customer service. Experience in black powder weapons use is preferred but ability to learn is acceptable. Experience in 19th century gardening helpful. Must possess knowledge or willingness to learn American history with primary emphasis on the American Civil War. Experience in lawn care & general maintenance of a historic site facility is required. Must possess skills in the use of hand tools & mechanical lawn equipment to include riding lawn mower, weedeater, and ability to learn to use of other related mechanical tools. Requires skills in the use of basic office equipment to include telephone, computer, Internet, copier machine, fax machine, & cash register. Ability to learn &
adhere to museum standards & principles. Ability & willingness to work outside under varied weather conditions.Training and Experience Requirements: Graduation from high school and three years of experience in giving or developing museum tours; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions

The North Carolina Connecting to Collections initiative is hiring a Museum Specialist to work in the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. This position is funded by an IMLS grant and is for a multi-year project. The Museum Specialist (working title Collections Care Trainer) will train staff and volunteers of cultural heritage institutions in a variety of conservation techniques related to three-dimensional objects care. This position is part-time, 30 hours a week at $15 per hour.

The North Carolina Connecting to Collections initiative is hiring an Administrative Officer to work in the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. This position is funded by an IMLS grant and is for a multi-year project. The Administrative Officer (working title Disaster Preparedness Coordinator) will work with institutions to develop disaster plans, form networks of response teams, and promote awareness of the importance of disaster preparedness. This position is full-time at $40,000 per year.

Curator, Mountain Heritage Center & Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC
The Curator oversees collection development, exhibits, and over 10,000 artifacts (Native American objects, textiles, musical instruments, and agricultural equipment).
The strongest candidates will combine academic study and work experience in the culture of the southern Appalachians, exhibit design, and collections management. Other qualifications include:
- Master's degree in history or allied field is strongly preferred. Applicants with a bachelor's degree and significant professional experience will be considered.
- A successful record of securing external funding.
- Experience working with PastPerfect Collection Management software, digital media, and other supporting skills;
- College-level teaching experience.
