The North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) is applying for a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). NCMA is planning a large renovation and a new construction project, changes which will impact nearly every department in the museum.
A major component of the grant will be to include other museums in the learning process. Museums will be
invited to take part in meetings to develop an understanding of how large physical changes impact a museum, and to give back accumulated knowledge to all museums in the area. NCMA will need to partner with state museum organizations to make this possible (NCMC, Virginia Association of Museums, South Carolina Federation of Museums, and the Southeastern Museums Conference).
NCMC and other museum organizations could help this process in several ways:
* Facilitate contact with museums that have undergone renovation and construction in the past;
* Reach museums that will be under-going renovation and construction in the future and are interested in
having access to the information that NCMA will be gathering;
* Provide forums such as newsletters, websites, workshops, seminars, and annual conferences to both generate and disseminate information concerning physical changes to museums.
If NCMA is awarded this grant (notification in September 2005), the institution will be seeking a partnership with NCMC and other museums organizations to make this project a reality. The possible returns for everyone are considerable, particularly if the potential three years of the grant are realized.
