Survey of North Carolina College and University Museum-Related Courses - 2005 version

Survey commenced by Sean P. Sonderman and Nancy Walters, 1995
Updated by Peter Koch, Mountain Heritage Center, July 2000
Updated by Peter Koch and Jannette Mina, August 2005
North Carolina Museums Council Student Affairs Committee

The following directory is an updated survey of all private and public, four-year colleges and universities in the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the survey is to determine which North Carolina institutions offer museum-related programs and/or courses. If an institution is not detailed in the survey, it offers no known museum-related course work at this time.

The researcher surveyed college and university anthropology, art, and history departments, design schools, and other departments that offer museum training or experience. Entries include degrees offered (if any), contact persons (when available), telephone numbers, web addresses, course listings, and additional information.

The survey is divided into public and private institutions. It is obvious from the survey results that public institutions dominate the field in quantity and variety of courses offered. This survey does not, however, judge program or course quality.

Listed course are only those that directly include museum training. Course offerings vary in their availability. Some are offered every semester while others are offered much less regularly. Many of the colleges and universities have ties with local museums and historic sites and therefore offer hands-on experiences. For latest information on any of the surveyed public or private institutions, follow the lines in the master list below. Details on programs located follow.
