Visitor Services Assistant/Public History Intern, Raleigh

Part-time (16 to 32 hours per week); Starting Salary: $8.50 per hour; Salary is negotiable based on experience.

Background: Historic Yates Mill County Park features the last remaining gristmill (circa 1756) in Wake County, which has been restored to working order. The historic and environmental park, located 5 miles from downtown Raleigh on Lake Wheeler Road, opened to the public in May 2006. The park is open 8am to dusk, 361 days per year. The historic mill is open for corn grinding demonstrations on the third weekend of each month, with one-hour heritage tours occurring on most other weekends from March through November. 

Primary Duties: Wake County Parks is looking to hire part-time staff to assist with visitor services, mill tours, educational programming, special events, historical and genealogical research, collections management, and other duties as assigned by Park Management. This position is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operation of the A.E. Finley Center for Research and Education located at Historic Yates Mill County Park. Visitor services related tasks include greeting park visitors, answering phones, handling facility and program reservations, checking the park email address, helping to update the park website, providing information (e.g., directions, maps, brochures) to visitors as needed, and maintaining an adequate inventory of park resource materials. The employee in this position should have a broad knowledge of park resources and facilities, and must exercise tact, maintaining good public relations with park users under all circumstances. This position must also work with, and supervise, some park volunteers, and assist with minor janitorial and maintenance duties as needed. Flexible scheduling is available. Qualifications: All applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a valid NC driver’s license. Applicants must be able to perform physical tasks outdoors during morning, evening, weekend, and holiday hours. The employee must be willing to work one to two weekends a month, depending on the hours worked per week. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in Parks and Recreation, Cultural Resources Management, and Public History.

The North Carolina Museum of History, located in downtown Raleigh, provides internship opportunities for students looking for experience in museums.

Project goals: The selected intern will be introduced to the field of museum education and the role of museum educators. The intern will gain an understanding of the various sections within the museum setting and will help develop and implement on-site programs; research objects in the museum collection; write articles for the volunteer museum newsletter; and conduct educational programs and tours. Opportunity exists to undertake an independent historical research project to support interpretation, develop materials for school programs, or develop and conduct visitor surveys. The student's interests and abilities will drive the specific type and scope of project.

Work Schedule: The intern must be able to volunteer a total of 100 hours during the course of the internship. Weekly schedule is negotiable.

Qualifications: Candidates from all backgrounds with a demonstrated interest in museum work are encouraged to apply. Preference given to History, Public History, Education, English, or related social science majors. Computer skills are essential. Accuracy and strong attention to detail are crucial. The applicant must have at least a 2.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale and have completed first year of college before beginning internship.

In addition to the Gallery's paid internships and fellowships, a number of unpaid internships, research assistantships, and apprenticeships are available. Applicants work in the curatorial, education, conservation, publishing, and design departments, supervised by a curator or other department head. Interns participate in the museum seminar and contribute to ongoing Gallery projects and programs; research assistants and apprentices concentrate on specific projects.
