Join the NCMC Board of Directors and Standing Committees that Shape the Future of Museums in North Carolina
Are you passionate about museums, culture, and community? Do you want to help museums thrive across North Carolina while amplifying diverse voices and fostering meaningful connections? The North Carolina Museums Council (NCMC) is looking for enthusiastic and visionary leaders to join our Board of Directors and Standing Committees.
As a volunteer Board member, you’ll play a pivotal role in guiding our leadership, outreach, and various initiatives. You’ll collaborate with fellow leaders, volunteers, and museum professionals to strengthen the museum field, champion innovation, and ensure that our work reflects the full richness of our state’s cultural landscape. Meet our current Board members to see the talented team you could be joining.
All Board positions are volunteer roles. Volunteering and serving on a Board is a meaningful way to give back to the museum field—offering opportunities to build leadership skills, expand your professional network, and make a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of North Carolina. Positions have 2-year terms, with various positions opening on alternating years. Members are expected to attend four in-person Board meetings each year—in March (during our annual conference), June, September, and December—along with monthly virtual check-in meetings. All Board members also serve on at least one committee.
The average time commitment is approximately 2 hours per week, though it may vary depending on your role and the season. Our “busy season,” from January through April, is when we plan and organize our annual conference, so some weeks may be more active.
All are welcome to apply. We seek a diverse mix of voices, including seasoned and emerging museum professionals, students, volunteers, sponsors, and representatives from cultural heritage organizations. Guided by reciprocity and inclusion, NCMC connects people and institutions across North Carolina, providing opportunities for growth, professional development, and community engagement.
If you’re ready to contribute your expertise, creativity, and leadership to the museum community, we want you on our team. Together, we can ensure that museums in North Carolina remain dynamic spaces of learning, reflection, and connection.
Apply to join the NCMC Board today and help shape the future of museums across our state.
