The Appalachian Women’s Museum is located in Dillsboro, NC. The organization is the steward of a National Register of Historic Places property that includes a restored farmhouse, a canning house, several other outbuildings, a working garden and totalling about an acre and a half. Our mission is to gather, preserve and share the stories of Southern Appalachian Women past, present and future. We strive to provide a life-long learning environment that is centered on the lives and experiences of women.
The 2026 AWM summer intern will assist in the creation of k-12 educational resources utilizing the AWM grounds, house, museum and objects, and assist with visitor experience during museum open hours. Working directly with staff, advisory board, community partners and local educators, the educational internship recipient will create activities, guides, and tours for each age range. The plans created by the educational intern will provide a diverse representation of the lives of Southern Appalachian Women and their contributions to the region and nation. Central to this internship is engagement with local educators and partners. The educational intern will be a representative of the AWM during this project. It is important to the AWM that all partners be treated with respect to foster connection and future collaboration. The internship runs from mid-May through August for a total of 150 hours minimum. The dates are negotiable. This is a hybrid position with a flexible schedule. Recipient will be required in-person at least 1-2 days a week.
The AWM is an equal opportunity institution that values the insight and direction of a diverse cohort of people. The property is located on ancestral Cherokee lands. We maintain a deep respect for the land, waters and mountains that connect us through time and space. The AWM aspires to be a community site for life-long learning. It is important to the AWM that interns are reimbursed for the labor they provide. This is a paid internship; the intern will be paid in two installments through the summer session. We also support internships for credit.
