Workshop 1: Sunday April 12, Hilton Greenville, Ballroom A

Building a Museum Internship Program

9:30 am - 11:30 am

Workshop fee: $25 (30 people)

Internships can be mutually beneficial for both students and museums, but building a sustainable program takes time. During this two-hour workshop, we will explore the nuts and bolts of developing a successful internship program. Hear from internship coordinators from across the state as they share their experience managing interns. Then join group discussions focused on building internship infrastructure, including program publicity, sourcing funding/benefits for students, finding the structure that works best for your museum, and more.

(Registration Required)

Workshop 2:  Sunday April 12, Joyner Library, East Carolina University

Creating Book Cradles and Document Mounts for Exhibition

12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Workshop fee: $25 (12-15 people)

Books and paper documents can be tricky items to display for exhibit. In this workshop participants will work with ECU’s book conservator to learn what materials are appropriate for use when mounting books and paper items for exhibit and compare different options across the preservation and cost spectrum. We will discuss how to assess safe opening angles when putting books on display, how to measure that angle, and how to translate those measurements into mount fabrication. Participants will learn methods for creating custom book cradles using basic archival supplies and how to safely restrain a book or documents that do not want to stay open or flat while on exhibit. Every participant will leave the workshop having made 3-4 different book and document mounts, receive material samples, and step-by-step handouts to replicate the techniques at their home institutions.  Course fee ($25) covers supplies for mounts and samples that participants may take home

(Registration Required)
